Diegetic and non-diegetic music cue different transitions, give the viewers vital information in terms of time frame, place and plot, and in a more general sense music is a signifier of emotion, establishing a certain mood and atmosphere and producing different emotional responses. In this interview, we meet music supervisor Thomas Golubić who has worked on prominent productions like Six Feet Under (HBO, 2001-2005), Breaking Bad (AMC, 2008-2013), Halt and Catch Fire (AMC,2014-present), Better Call Saul (AMC, 2015-present), Love (Netflix, 2016-) and Once I Was: The Hal Ashby Story (2017). The interview focuses on the use of music in Breaking Bad, Halt and Catch Fire and Better Call Saul, and it includes a segment about Hal Ashby – one of Golubić’s main sources of inspiration – and some general tendencies and paradigm shifts in film and television.

* * *

Facts

Interviewer: Andreas Halskov

Production and editing: Jan Oxholm

Excerpts from: Breaking Bad (2008-2013) © Gilligan, AMC, Better Call Saul (2015-) © Gilligan, AMC, Halt and Catch Fire (2014-) © Cantwell & Rogers, AMC, Rosemary’s Baby (1968) © Polanski, Paramount Pictures, Adam’s Rib (1949) © Cukor, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Shampoo (1975) © Ashby, Columbia Pictures, Harold and Maude (1971) © Ashby, Paramount Pictures; Trentemøller, Little Barrie.

16:9 TALKS.
